The Burundi Frontosa is a highly sought-after regional variant of the Frontosa cichlid, native to the deep rocky waters of Lake Tanganyika, specifically along the Burundi shoreline. It is renowned for its bold vertical barring, deep blue coloration, and pronounced head hump, making it one of the most iconic large African cichlids in the aquarium hobby.

The body is tall, deep, and laterally compressed, giving it a powerful yet elegant profile. Its most distinctive feature is the series of dark vertical bars running across a pale base body that ranges from bluish-white to light silver or soft blue. In the Burundi variant, the contrast between the dark bars and lighter body is especially sharp and well-defined.

Mature males develop a prominent nuchal hump on the forehead, which becomes more pronounced with age and dominance. The overall body coloration deepens into rich shades of blue, cobalt, or navy, especially under proper lighting conditions. The fins are elongated and often edged with soft blue or translucent highlights, contributing to its regal appearance.

Females are generally smaller and less intensely colored, with more muted blue-gray tones and less developed head structure. Juveniles show lighter coloration and gradually develop stronger barring and deeper blues as they mature.

Adult Burundi Frontosas commonly reach 10–12 inches (25–30 cm), with slow but steady growth. They are long-lived and can become centerpiece fish in large aquariums designed to replicate deep-water Lake Tanganyika environments.

In aquariums, the Burundi Frontosa is known for its calm, deliberate swimming behavior and semi-peaceful temperament compared to many other large cichlids. It prefers spacious tanks with rock structures and open swimming areas. When kept properly, it becomes a majestic showpiece fish, admired for its contrast patterning, deep coloration, and imposing yet graceful presence.
