The Thai Lace is a selectively bred ornamental variety of Peacock cichlid known for its intricate dark patterning over a bright red, pink, orange and bluish body. Developed primarily through aquarium breeding programs—especially in Thailand—this strain is valued for its dramatic contrast, combining the elegance of Peacock cichlids from Lake Malawi with a distinctive “lace-like” reticulated pattern.

The body is moderately elongated and laterally compressed, typical of the Aulonocara group, but with a more visually complex appearance than many standard peacock varieties. The base coloration can vary widely, ranging from soft yellow and gold to pale blue, champagne, or light lavender depending on the specific breeding line. Over this base, the fish displays a striking black or dark brown lace pattern—an intricate network of lines, speckles, and irregular blotches that spread across the body and fins.

The patterning is most pronounced in mature males, often extending from the head through the flanks and into the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. The fins themselves are usually elongated and may show alternating bands or edging of dark pigment that enhances the lace-like effect. In some strains, subtle metallic blue or green iridescence appears beneath the pattern, adding depth and shimmer under aquarium lighting.

Females are generally more subdued, with lighter body coloration and reduced pattern intensity, though they still retain some of the characteristic mottling. As males mature and establish dominance, their coloration and contrast intensify significantly, especially during breeding displays.

Adult Thai Lace Peacocks typically reach 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) in length. In aquarium settings, they are active but relatively peaceful compared to many other African cichlids, making them suitable for community Malawi setups with compatible tank mates.
