The Fossorochromis rostratus, commonly known as the Sand Diver, is a striking predatory cichlid native to the sandy habitats of Lake Malawi in East Africa. Renowned for its elongated body, pointed snout, and shimmering silver-blue coloration, this species is perfectly adapted for life over open sand flats.

Unlike many cichlids that defend rocky territories, the Sand Diver hunts by cruising just above the substrate, using its keen eyesight to locate smaller fish. It can rapidly plunge into the sand to ambush prey, earning its common name. Mature males develop brilliant metallic blue hues with contrasting darker fins during breeding, while females remain more subdued in silver and gray tones.

Growing up to 40 cm (16 inches), Fossorochromis rostratus requires a spacious aquarium with a soft sandy substrate, excellent filtration, and plenty of open swimming space. Although generally peaceful toward similarly sized fish, its natural predatory instincts make it unsuitable for small tankmates.
